Mount Whitsunday Residence

About 2016 AIA Queensland Architecture Awards Central Queensland Regional CommendationSet atop the north facing side of Mt Whitsunday, the site affords spectacular views, very steep terrain and a foreboding exposure to cyclonic storms of the highest danger. Juggling the two parameters of views and structural robustness, the house design evolved as a heavy, rigid concrete frame anchored into the mountain. A long, narrow plan shape hugs the contours and connects the variation in site levels. The two distinct structures of Garage /Service/Storage and Dwelling are connected via an outdoor stair and bridge that lace together the opposed forms. The roofs are separated as if conjoined twins with their opposing pitches directing the mountain air–flow over the structures. The nesting forms create an intimate entry landscape that contrasts the mountain edge expansive view that awaits after entering through to the northern edge. Transition into the house dramatically reveals a narrow stair canyon that views through full height frameless glass to the Whitsunday splendour. Essentially planned over two levels the lower level has a compact open plan, Kitchen, Living, Dining Area that opens to the northern view and a very private new North West pool deck. The upper level houses bedrooms […]

About 2015 AIA Queensland Architecture AwardsState Commendation  A streamlined linear extension of a converted cottage adds much needed space to an integral community support facility. The corner site, constrained by area enabled a 3 metre wide linear extension along the southern boundary fronting the major road. The extruded form has a translucent ‘lantern’ fascia to the south which provides ample natural light to interior by day and glows like a metaphorical beacon to the street by night. The architectural response functions environmentally and as enlivened streetscape. A very modest budget has covered the extension, renovation, new driveway/carpark and landscaping. The existing house was constructed of solid concrete walls (and partitions!) so demolition was minimised to the south wall. The extension houses a new entry/waiting area; a new hygienic food storage room and a training room. Staffed by volunteers, the facility works hard to assist many community needs including provision of food packages; counselling; basic skills training (computer, cooking, language). Security was a major issue and staff safety was carefully addressed in the planning and detailing. Entry checkpoints, clear sight-lines for internal surveillance and one-way glass assist staff with the safe and efficient processing of clients. The architecture is […]
