About 2008 AIA Queensland Architecture Awards Brisbane Regional Commendation QUAD represents the first trial of a new type of light industry, small lot development.  Essentially conceived as a commercial townhouse module for small business use, the design evolved out of a desire to reduce the dominance of parking and vehicle manoeuvring on the ground level of the small site. The design creates a new typology for urban infill in light industry area.  The focus on small business reduced the ‘grain’ of the building mass and offers a livelier streetscape.  People business triumphs over vehicle business.  The tenancy arrangement suits a wide variety of users, hence the flexibility sought by small operators in industrial zones is catered for.  The other benefit is in terms of workplace culture whereby the focus on useable open space was given importance.  Third level covered roof terraces would not normally survive the financial rigours of commercial property development.  The desire for these types of spaces for workers in the modern workplace is catered for and the successful uptake of leases on the tenancies proves the model.  Four small tenancies make up the 3 storey development.  It was agreed that single vehicle access was appropriate to the […]

About 2017 Gold Coast Urban Design Awards, Commendation2016 AIA Queensland Architecture Awards State Medal (Beatrice Hutton Award) for Commercial ArchitectureGold Coast Building of the Year This project involved the re-planning and re-birthing of an ‘ugly duckling’ conglomerate structure that housed the Student Uni Bar, Function Room and some eating areas. The major architectural manoeuvres involved relocating the Bar to create a new pedestrian entry to the University that links the new light rail station through an alfresco dining area and into the campus. Architecturally the building’s many disparate parts are united in a clean palette of durable materials and rational planning to effectively renew the whole. The original building fabric has been carved out to create the Link laneway connection complete with sky blue roof light. This links the food tenancies and Uni Bar between the University entry and the campus. The Bar is moved from the Campus front door back into a larger area within the complex that has clear access to an outdoor terrace, under an extended sculptural roof as part of the works. The new Uni Bar is strategically positioned on the Link Laneway pedestrian spine, which is a major campus thoroughfare. The new design incorporates […]
