About 2015 AIA Queensland Architecture Awards State CommendationJQ1 is a highly sculptural apartment building in the Kelvin Grove Urban Village. Expressionist in form, the building exudes character through the architecture to enliven the streetscapes and the individual dwellings it houses. The corner site gives the building two prominent street frontages for all apartments to address with individual balconies. Graceful curves and expressive angles in the dynamic plan form yield 5 individual apartment layouts ensuring unique character that sets the building apart from the mundane neighbours. The site has a 6 metre fall that influenced the design as two connected blocks stepped up the street. A central circulation breezeway atrium links all vertical and horizontal movement paths. This encourages neighbourly interaction and engenders the sense of community within the complex. Natural ventilation of all circulation paths improves the amenity of each apartment in terms of cross-ventilation (sensible Environmentally Sustainable Design) and saves costly mechanical fire/ventilation services for the safety of the building. The architectural detailing is simple in palette with minimalist lines used in the metalwork screens, balustrades and sunshades. The mostly black and white colour scheme enables the form to clearly express itself in natural light. […]

About 2006 AIA Queensland Architecture Awards Multi-Residential AwardThe architectural approach focused on the AML&F Woolstore building as an enduring structure that would offer a unique experience for housing. The historic materiality evident in the oversized timbers and exposed brickwork emphasise the passing of time endured by the structure. The design seeks to capture this quality for all inhabitants and visitors to the building. The major design intervention is the creation of a 3-storey central breezeway spine that links the building both vertically & horizontally through a series of void and landscaped walkway spaces.  The existing roof sheeting is removed, exposing the structure and a new floating fibreglass roof hovers over the void. The new roof protects the interior from sun and rain whilst allowing the breezeway to naturally ventilate. Separation of units across the breezeway enables openable windows onto the space and thus natural ventilation & increased natural light into the units. The overall mechanical services load upon the building is drastically reduced. The individual unit plans have been simplified into grouped typologies on each level. A two storey loft/townhouse variation enabled maximum character of the Woolstore space to be experienced in many of the […]
