About 2015 AIA Queensland Architecture Awards State CommendationJQ1 is a highly sculptural apartment building in the Kelvin Grove Urban Village. Expressionist in form, the building exudes character through the architecture to enliven the streetscapes and the individual dwellings it houses. The corner site gives the building two prominent street frontages for all apartments to address with individual balconies. Graceful curves and expressive angles in the dynamic plan form yield 5 individual apartment layouts ensuring unique character that sets the building apart from the mundane neighbours. The site has a 6 metre fall that influenced the design as two connected blocks stepped up the street. A central circulation breezeway atrium links all vertical and horizontal movement paths. This encourages neighbourly interaction and engenders the sense of community within the complex. Natural ventilation of all circulation paths improves the amenity of each apartment in terms of cross-ventilation (sensible Environmentally Sustainable Design) and saves costly mechanical fire/ventilation services for the safety of the building. The architectural detailing is simple in palette with minimalist lines used in the metalwork screens, balustrades and sunshades.
