Newstead Brewery at BNE Domestic Terminal
Newstead Brewery BNE Domestic Terminal // AIA Award 2022, Interior
Newstead Brewery at BNE Domestic Terminal is a multi-purpose hospitality tenancy that is built freestanding within the terminal. Under strict guidelines, protecting the existing terminal architecture and runway views, the design seeks to visually distinguish the tenancy featuring walls of shiny Jetstream cladding influenced equally by aircraft construction and beer keg aesthetics. Painted signage and coloured patches mimic the branded beer cans and add a vibrancy to the austere zinc sheet. The holistic design features highly detailed built-in furniture, bespoke lighting and sculptural joinery units that abstract a theme of brewery elements.
Spatial planning is very economic by necessity minimising the Service footprint so the Dining areas can be maximised. Functionally there a compact Kitchen capable of producing a 24-hour menu linked to a full-service Bar. The Bar appears as carved into the larger volume of the built keg. The bar area is detailed with throughout with feature storage areas for the display of food and beverages. Every curvaceous corner is utilized to store and functionally assist in the delivery of Food and Beveridge. The beer taps are a feature that also is referenced in the Chandelier lighting and the AV displays where metallic curved pipes are featured. The edges of the tenancy are subtly marked by low height walled furniture and overhead feature planters incorporating lighting. This fulfills the BAC requirement that the tenancy must remain as transparent as possible to maintain the concourse views to aircraft on the Tarmac.
Comfortable seating areas are grouped into the dining spaces and suit the wide variety of needs of patrons who vary from time poor to longer stay diners. Hence there are bar stools (referencing bottle tops), comfortable armchairs and banquettes or lower café stools with smaller coffee tables. Furniture selection and scheduling was an important part of the design service. Signage and branding were considered critical in attracting customers in such a competitive environment. The brewery aesthetic was played upon in the architecture and there is the large painted signage of the brand and more subtle references in the coloured feature lighting that mimic both beer cans and pipework. A neon slogan is incorporated as art that can be seen distantly along the concourse.
