Youth Shelter Pialba
Door 42 - Youth Housing Shelter, Pialba // Qld Architecture Awards, State Commendation. UDIA Wildcard Award
The Youth Shelter Pialba is a community building for teenagers and young adults, this supported accommodation gives young people facing homelessness a stable environment to develop and create a viable future. Support staff and carers work and stay on site, providing support, training and life skills.
The floor plan separates the three main built functions of Counselling/Offices; a Share house; and 4 Independent Apartments with landscaped courtyards, each accessible off a communal circulation path. This ensures that calm outlooks, privacy and cross ventilation are maximised to all rooms in each dwelling.
A community space at the Entry was created co-locating the office, administration, counselling and training zones to create a ‘living room’ for support, learning, sharing and connecting with vulnerable youth. The young people in this supported accommodation have usually escaped very unstable home environments. Hence an integrated garden/home environment that embraces a variety of private and communal spaces for creative play and contemplation was at the core of the design.
